We held our second petal meeting of the year on a cold Saturday evening in our backyard. We learned St Catherine of Siena was the 25th of 25 children born in the middle of the plague in 1347. She lived a life of penance and offered up her sufferings. She always wanted to devote her life only to Jesus so she cut her hair because she thought it would make her less likely to be married. One day, Jesus appeared to her and gave her a ring. She opened monastaries, was involved in politics, and convinced the Pope to return to Rome to avoid a great division in the Church. She was declared a Doctor of the Church. She said, “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” Her feast day is April 29th. She is the patron saint of nurses and against fire.
We worked to memorize this verse to help us grow in the virtue of faith: Be Still and Know that I am God Psalm 46:10
We prayed this Act of Faith: O my God, I believe all the truths which the Catholic Church teaches because you have made them known.
We made Sunflower hair barrettes to help us remember the amazing faith of St Catherine to follow Jesus’ will.
We bundled up by the campfire and watched the movie, “Horton Hears a Who” to help us remember to be brave about sharing our faith and helping others in need. Horton sacrificied himself to help others. He was teased for his faith. He believed the Whos existed because he heard their call. We have faith in Jesus because we hear his call. We have faith in our mother Church to teach us how best to live and follow Jesus.
We ate Sunflower seeds and talked about the sunflower being a symbol of faith, a flower that follows every movement of the sun, as we should follow the Son.
We prepared Advent Candles to sell to the parish and blessed them. We asked for the intercession of St Catherine to protect our homes from fire and to light a spiritual fire of faith. The candles represent Faith (Prophecy), Love (Bethlehem), Joy (Shepherds), and Peace (Angels). Some families add a white candle to the center to represent Jesus that is lit on Christmas Eve.
To order candles (or share with friends and family) go to this site: https://stplittleflowers.wixsite.com/website/advent-candles
We earned our Faith petal. May God Bless us and help us grow in the virtue of Faith.
Our sashes have arrived. Vests that were too small were traded out. See below for badge placement for sashes.
Our next events will be selling Advent Candles after Masses through November, and a petal meeting on the virtue of Industry and St Cabrini either as a bonfire or perhaps ice skating.
St Catherine of Siena, Pray for Us!
